Combe Hill Neolithic Causewayed Enclosure

You won't find gift shops or tarmacked car parks at Combe Hill. What you will find is a windswept Sussex hilltop where people gathered 5,500 years ago to hold ceremonies, trade goods, and bury their dead. The Neolithic causewayed enclosure sits at around 600 feet, visible as subtle earthworks - concentric ditches and banks that take proper looking at to spot. Most visitors walk straight past without realising they're standing on one of southern England's most significant prehistoric sites.

It's very much for the archaeology-minded rather than casual strollers. The remains are humble by modern standards - you're reading the landscape as much as seeing it - but that's precisely what makes it compelling. This is where Neolithic communities left their fingerprints on the chalk downland, and the views across the Weald while you're up there are genuinely excellent. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're actually interested in the period; ten minutes if you're just passing through on a walk.

Nearby Pevensey makes a sensible base, with Warren Wood Country Park just three miles off offering proper holiday facilities. The walk up from the village takes you through working farmland, so check access before you go - locals are generally fine with walkers, but it's not a formal tourist route. Free to visit, naturally, since there's nothing to charge admission for. Winter gives the clearest views of the earthworks; summer grass obscures them unless it's been recently grazed.
