Colyton Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre occupies a converted Victorian building right in Colyton village, which is proper lovely if you're after a glimpse of how life worked in this corner of Devon centuries back. You'll find yourself in rooms filled with photographs, documents, and objects that tell the story of a place that's seen cloth-making, farming, and all manner of local enterprise. It's the sort of place where a retired schoolteacher or local historian could easily spend two hours; families with young kids might manage forty minutes before restlessness sets in.

Admission is free, which means there's no barrier to popping in when you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Beer Head Holiday Park is only 3.5 miles away, and Oakdown, just over five miles out, is rated exceptionally well. Colyton itself sits a few miles inland from Seaton, so you could easily combine a visit here with a coastal walk or fish and chips by the sea.

The real pull is if you're the type who likes understanding a place through its past rather than just postcards. The volunteers who run it clearly know their stuff, and they'll happily chat about what you're looking at. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested, half that if you're just killing time between activities. It won't blow your mind, but it's a solid rainy-afternoon option and genuinely free.
