Collyer's Brook Nature Reserve

Walking into Collyer's Brook Nature Reserve feels like stumbling into someone's secret garden, except you're absolutely meant to be here. It's a proper woodland and wetland site just outside Shaftesbury, the sort of place that looks like nothing from the road until you're suddenly surrounded by mature trees and the sound of water.

The reserve itself is modest in scale, which is exactly why it works. There's a stream running through it - the brook itself - and enough paths to let you potter about for an hour or so without feeling you've exhausted every corner. Bird watchers get genuinely excited about this spot; the mix of wet woodland means you'll spot woodland species most casual visitors don't expect to find in Dorset. Spring and early summer are best if you want to actually see things rather than just hear them rustling about.

This is walking territory, really. Not challenging - the paths are well-trodden and flat enough - but proper contemplative stuff. Bring binoculars, a field guide if you're that way inclined. Families will manage it fine if the kids aren't expecting rides or ice cream.
