Coldham's Common

Just east of Cambridge, Coldham's Common is one of those proper wild corners that locals know about and tourists often miss. It's a nature reserve that feels genuinely undeveloped - rough grassland, scrubby bits, ditches, and the kind of vegetation that thrives in damp ground. You won't find manicured paths or information boards here; it's more about wandering and seeing what you stumble upon.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from it. The wetland habitat attracts plovers, warblers, and various raptors depending on the season, so bring binoculars if you're interested. It's also decent for a dog walk if you don't mind letting them off lead in relatively open space. Families with young children might find it a bit dull after twenty minutes - there's no playground or visitor facilities, just the land itself.

It's free, and you can access it pretty much any time. Allow forty minutes to an hour for a proper poke around. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be best for seeing wildlife. The ground can get boggy, particularly in winter, so waterproof boots are worth considering.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites within a couple of miles - Cherry Hinton or Gayton Farm are closest - it's a quick escape without having to drive far. It won't be the centrepiece of your trip, but it's exactly the sort of place that breaks up a holiday nicely when you want something low-key and genuinely local.
