This is Essex's Cold War Bunker near Tilbury - a subterranean command centre designed to protect regional government if nuclear missiles came over the horizon. It's properly eerie down there.

The bunker itself is the attraction. You walk through narrow corridors lined with vintage equipment, dormitories where staff would have sheltered for weeks, and the operations room where officials would have coordinated the response to apocalypse. The artefacts feel genuine because they are - decontamination suits, radiation monitors, ration packs. There's no theatrical reconstruction here, just the cold facts of how Britain prepared for the worst.

Histor enthusiasts will find it fascinating, and teenagers often grip the reality of it better than you'd expect. Families with younger kids might find it a bit intense - it's confined spaces and heavy atmosphere rather than interactive fun. Plan for 90 minutes to two hours. The museum is free to enter, which is generous given how singular the experience is.
