Coetgae

The woodland around Coetgae feels properly wild compared to managed forests you might know. It's a genuine slice of Monmouthshire's deep countryside, a few miles north of Chepstow, where you can wander through native broadleaf trees without the usual visitor infrastructure getting in the way.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. There are paths threading through the forest, though they're not manicured or waymarked like a country estate might be. You'll see oak, ash, and beech, depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right. Autumn is moody and atmospheric. In winter, the bare branches open up sightlines you don't get in summer.

This works best for walkers who actually want to walk rather than snap photos at a viewpoint and move on. If you've got kids under eight expecting a playground or a visitor centre, they'll get bored. Teenagers and adults who like the feeling of getting properly into a wood, away from mown verges and café culture, will find it worthwhile.

There's no entrance fee or obvious visitor facilities. No car park, no toilets - just access from the road and your own legs doing the work. Allow a couple of hours minimum. It's close enough to Penhein Glamping if you're staying in the area, making a natural morning or late-afternoon escape from your accommodation.

Unless you're keen on forest walks, it's not the kind of place you'd drive 45 minutes out of your way to visit. But if you're already exploring Chepstow and the borderland, it fills a gap nicely.
