The forest sits just outside Llanymynech, a proper working woodland rather than some manicured country estate job. Walking in here, you're not getting theme park trails - you get actual forest: dense conifers, muddy paths that mean business, and the kind of quiet you don't find near towns. It's the sort of place where you'll hear more bird calls than footsteps.

Coed Ty-Gwyn works best for walkers who know what they're doing. Families with young kids might find it a bit rough around the edges unless they're the type that doesn't mind getting their boots mucky. The paths can be boggy even days after rain, so come prepared. There's something genuinely peaceful about it though - no visitor centres, no gift shops, just trees and the occasional moment where you remember why you liked forests in the first place.

If you're based at Tanat Holiday Park down the road, it's an easy hop for a morning walk without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper loop, longer if you're the type to just sit on a log for a bit. It won't blow your mind with vistas or dramatic features, but it's honest work - good air, proper exercise, and a real slice of Powys woodland without the tourist gloss. Free admission and no faffing about with opening hours. Just turn up and get on with it.
