Coed Tŷ-maen

The woodland around Coed Tŷ-maen feels properly wild in a way that's quite rare this close to Porthcawl. Tucked inland from the coast, it's a genuine forest floor experience - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which doesn't happen often near a holiday resort.

There are decent walking trails threading through the trees, nothing too demanding but enough to feel like a proper adventure if you're bringing kids. The forest canopy is thick enough that even on drizzly days it stays reasonably dry underfoot. Root systems and fallen branches mean you need to watch your footing, but that's half the charm - it keeps people moving at a pace that suits families with restless legs.

Walkers will appreciate the network of paths, and it's exactly the sort of place where you can burn off a morning without needing a map or guided tour. The trees are mixed woodland rather than monoculture plantation, which makes a real difference to the atmosphere. Local hikers know it well, so you'll occasionally spot others, but it never feels crowded.

If you're staying at Trecco Bay Holiday Park, Coed Tŷ-maen is close enough for a half-day venture - far enough that it genuinely feels like you've escaped the holiday park routine, but near enough that getting there isn't a military operation. Spring and autumn are your best bets for walking here. Summer can get a bit muggy under the canopy. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared with snacks and water. Free access, no faffing about with entry fees.
