Cod Beck Reservoir

The water at Cod Beck Reservoir sits grey and still most days, ringed by moorland that shifts from purple to rust depending on the season. It's a working reservoir serving Northallerton and the surrounding area, but that doesn't stop it being a proper spot for a walk. The footpath circles the perimeter - nothing too strenuous, though the northern stretch gets a bit boggy after rain. Allow around ninety minutes if you're taking it slow with photographs.

This is walker's territory, mainly. Families with young children might find it a touch dull after the first thirty minutes - it's water, sky, and not much else in terms of incident. But if you're after a straightforward circuit walk with decent views across the reservoir and back towards the Pennines, it delivers. Birdwatchers come here regularly, particularly in winter.

It's free to access, and there's basic parking near the dam. The real value is how it plugs into a wider moorland walking itinerary. You're only a short drive from Cote Ghyll Caravan Park, which sits less than a mile away and is excellently rated - ideal if you're planning a week of North York Moors walking and want a base that's close to water-based scenery as well as upland trails. Whorlton Pods, three miles off, offers something a bit different if you fancy glamping rather than traditional caravanning. Either way, Cod Beck slots neatly into a self-catering holiday where walking is the main draw rather than a bolted-on activity.
