Cocksburn Reservoir

The water here sits quietly among the Perthshire hills, a proper working reservoir that doesn't announce itself. Cocksburn isn't the sort of place you'd stumble on by accident - it takes a bit of effort to reach from Stirling, which is probably why it feels so peaceful when you do. The dam creates a decent stretch of water, and on a clear day the reflections are worth the drive alone.

Walkers get the most from this one. The paths around the reservoir are straightforward and well-maintained, ranging from a quick half-hour circuit to a more ambitious loop if you want to stretch your legs properly. It's accessible without being crowded, which counts for a lot in Perthshire. The surrounding landscape rolls gently - moorland and forestry rather than dramatic peaks, but that's exactly what makes it feel like a proper escape rather than a tourist trap.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited on activities beyond the walk itself, though the water's always interesting to watch and the quietness can be a genuine asset if you're after somewhere peaceful. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. The best time to visit is spring through autumn when the weather's reliable and the paths aren't boggy.

If you're based at Craighead Howf, the reservoir's only five miles or so away and makes a cracking morning or afternoon outing. It's the kind of spot that fills the space between bigger attractions rather than commanding a full day on its own, but that doesn't make it any less worthwhile.
