Cockrams Recreation Ground

Just outside Shaftesbury, Cockrams Recreation Ground is a proper working nature reserve - the kind of place where you're as likely to bump into a local dog walker as you are a serious birdwatcher. It's essentially open grassland and woodland with ponds, nothing flashy, but genuinely good for spotting wildlife if you know when to look. The reserve supports everything from newts to various bird species depending on the season.

It's best suited to families wanting a gentle walk without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots, and to anyone interested in wetland habitats. Expect to spend an hour here comfortably - longer if you've got proper binoculars and patience. There are paths through the site, though nothing particularly dramatic or challenging. The grassland areas work well for younger children who need space to run about.

Admission appears to be free. The reserve doesn't have the polished visitor facilities of a major attraction, which is rather the point - it's low-key and maintains its genuine character. Visit during spring and early summer for the best wildlife activity.
