Coalhouse Fort Park

The Thames curves past Tilbury and suddenly you're standing inside a Victorian fortress built to keep French invasion fleets at bay. Coalhouse Fort Park is all red brick ramparts, gun emplacements, and the kind of engineering obsession the Victorians got genuinely excited about. Walking the perimeter takes maybe an hour, and the views across the estuary are properly expansive - industrial enough to feel real, not sanitised.

It's a nature reserve now, which means the fort has company. Mudflats below attract waders and the occasional seal, while the grassy banks inside host nesting terns in summer. History types will spend longer than walkers, poking about the casemates and imagining the crew quarters. Kids either love the fortress vibe or get restless after forty minutes - depends entirely on the child.

The best reason to come is the walk itself. It's not demanding, and you're not battling crowds. The light hits differently depending on the season, and the Thames always looks better from the inside of a fort than from the visitor centre carpark. Being this close to Tilbury's docks and container ships adds an oddly compelling backdrop.

Thamesview Camping is barely half a mile away, which makes this a solid morning outing if you're based locally. Free to wander round, no facilities worth mentioning, so plan accordingly. Go on a clear day when the water reflects the sky properly - that's when you'll understand why someone bothered building it.
