Coal Measure Giants

Three towering sculptures rise from the Forest of Dean landscape like ancient sentinels, each one carved from local stone and standing over 15 feet tall. The Coal Measure Giants, positioned along walking routes near Lydney, represent the area's industrial heritage through these impressive modern artworks.

Created by artist Diane Maclean, the sculptures celebrate the coal miners who once worked these hills. Each giant has its own character - weathered faces gazing across the valleys where pit wheels once turned. The detail is remarkable, from the folds in their clothing to the tools they carry.

Walkers will appreciate how the giants integrate with existing footpaths, making them easy to visit during longer forest rambles. Families can turn giant-spotting into a proper adventure, though the sculptures are spread across different locations so you'll need to plan your route.

The best approach is from the Sculpture Trail car parks, where clear waymarking guides you between the artworks. Allow at least two hours if you want to see all three properly - the forest paths can be muddy after rain.

For those staying at nearby Whitemead Forest Park or Bracelands Campsite, the giants make an excellent morning walk before the crowds arrive. The combination of art, history, and forest scenery works well for older children who might otherwise find a woodland walk a bit samey.
