Cnoc nan Gobhar

The walk up Cnoc nan Gobhar isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel your legs by the top. Starting from near Durness, this modest Highland peak climbs to around 300 metres, giving proper views across the rugged northwest coast - all rocky outcrops, moorland, and that grey-blue sea that defines this part of Scotland.

What makes it worthwhile is the isolation. You won't find crowds here. The path is rough underfoot, boggy in places, and the wind can absolutely howl through, but that's rather the point. On a clear day - and you'll need to pick your moment in Sutherland - the views stretch all the way to Cape Wrath and beyond. It's the kind of summit where you can stand alone and actually hear yourself think.

The real audience here is walkers who like solitude over spectacle. It's not a dramatic peak, won't take your breath away in photos, but it rewards the effort with genuine Highland atmosphere. Budget two to three hours return from the car park, depending on fitness and how long you linger. There's no fee, no facilities, no interpretation - just mountain, moorland, and weather.

If you're staying at Sango Sands Oasis nearby, this makes a solid morning or afternoon walk without monopolising your whole day. You could easily combine it with exploring the dramatic cliffs at Cape Wrath or the beaches around Sango itself. Come prepared for bog, wind, and changeable weather. Durness itself is your supply point - not much there, but enough to stock up before heading out.
