Cnoc nan Each

The walk up Cnoc nan Each isn't long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you're not paying attention. From Durness - that remote northwest corner of the Highlands where the road genuinely runs out - it's a proper little scramble up rough grass and loose stone. Takes maybe forty minutes if you're steady, longer if you dawdle and take photos. The reward is genuine though: you're standing on a peak that commands the whole area, with Sango Bay spread below and the Atlantic chopping away at the coast. On a clear day the light does something special up here - it's one of those spots where the Highlands actually feel as vast as everyone claims.

It suits walkers who like a quick objective without the full-day commitment. Not technically hard, but you need basic fitness and sensible boots - the path is a bit of a bog in places and the wind can be testing. Kids aged eight-plus will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient. What you get is quiet. Genuine quiet. The kind you can't find anywhere else in Britain. No cafes, no facilities, no crowds - just you and the landscape.

If you're staying at Sango Sands Oasis, it's practically on your doorstep at five miles. Worth doing in the morning before the weather turns, which it will. Allow two hours total. Bring water. The drive to Durness itself is the point - the landscape gets progressively wilder the closer you get - so factor that into your planning. Not a destination for a rainy day, but on the right afternoon it's absolutely worth the drive.
