Cnoc Fhearchair

The walk up Cnoc Fhearchair rewards you with views that stretch across Loch Ness and the Highlands beyond - on a clear day, anyway. It's a proper Munro-adjacent peak near Drumnadrochit, the kind of hill that looks manageable from the car park but catches you out halfway up with boggy patches and steeper slopes than you bargained for.

Expect about two hours up and back, depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The terrain is mixed moorland and rough grassland - nothing technical, but it's not a stroll around a country estate either. Locals and experienced walkers get the most from this one. Families with younger kids might find it a slog without payoff, though determined teenagers with decent boots will manage fine.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit - bring water and snacks. It's free to climb, naturally. Autumn's a good time when the midges aren't hunting you and the light turns golden across the water.

Stay at Loch Ness Glamping just down the road and you've got a proper base for Highland walking. It's close enough that you could tackle this on a morning and still have afternoon energy for another local trail or a potter around Drumnadrochit itself.
