Cnoc an t-Sabhail

The walk up Cnoc an t-Sabhail from Tarbert is short, sharp, and properly rewarding. You're looking at roughly an hour to the summit if you're moving at a decent pace, which means this isn't a day-long commitment - more of a mid-morning sortie that fits neatly around everything else you've got planned.

It's a Corbett at 794 metres, which in Scottish terms means it punches above its weight for views without requiring genuine mountaineering kit. The path is obvious enough, though it can be boggy underfoot depending on the season. What you get at the top is the full sweep of Loch Tarbert and the surrounding Argyll landscape - proper fjord-like scenery with water cutting deep into the hills. On a clear day, it's the kind of view that makes you understand why people settle in these glens.

Historically it matters too. The name translates as "Hill of the Barn" and there's a standing stone up there, though you've got to look for it. It's not the flashy kind of hill that dominates Instagram, which is precisely why it's worth doing - you'll have the place to yourself most days.

Family groups with older kids will manage it fine. Very small children or anyone uncomfortable with a bit of boggy moorland might find it frustrating. If you're staying at Tarbert Holiday Park just down the road, it's an obvious choice for a morning or afternoon when the weather cooperates. Time it for the afternoon and you'll catch decent light on the water.
