Clough Head Woods

The woodland floor here is dense with moss and fern - you notice it before anything else. Clough Head Woods, a proper forest just north of Preston, offers something you don't often find in Lancashire: actual depth. This isn't a manicured nature reserve. The trees are tall, the paths wind properly, and you genuinely feel like you've left the suburbs behind.

Walkers will get the most from this place. The terrain is uneven, muddy in places, and the canopy is thick enough that even on grey days it feels atmospheric. Families with young kids might find it a bit much if they're after an easy stroll - it's not the sort of place you can push a buggy far - but older children who enjoy exploring will be properly engaged. Bring proper boots.

You're looking at a good hour or ninety minutes for a decent walk, depending on which paths you take. The woodland feels genuinely wild in stretches, with oak and beech dominating. Wildlife-spotters sometimes catch glimpses of deer, though you're more likely to just hear rustling and the occasional bird call.

It's a strong complement to a stay at Gibsons Barn Caravan Park, five miles south near Preston. Rather than spending another afternoon at the park facilities, this gets you properly into the landscape. The contrast between the two - the ordered caravan site and the unruly woodland - is exactly what makes a break work. Worth the short drive.
