Clough Copse - Woodland Trust

Clough Copse is a proper woodland reserve run by the Woodland Trust, a few miles outside Preston. It's the sort of place you'd miss if you weren't looking for it - easy walking trails through mixed woodland, nothing fancy, just trees and quiet. The reserve is small enough that you won't get lost, but enough space to feel genuinely away from things.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. The paths are straightforward, muddy in places after rain (bring decent boots), and there's genuine woodland feel rather than the manicured park vibe. It's ideal for families with younger kids who need a break from the car, though older children might find an hour here enough before restlessness sets in. Birdwatchers get something out of it too - the habitat attracts woodland species, though you'll need patience and binoculars to see much.

Free entry, no facilities to speak of, so arrive with a packed lunch if you're planning a proper morning out. Summer's busy, spring and autumn quieter and nicer for spotting wildlife. Winter's bleak but atmospheric.
