Clothes peg sculpture

Just outside Grantham sits one of England's most wonderfully daft public sculptures - a giant clothes peg. It's exactly what it sounds like: a colossal wooden peg, completely unpretentious and rather brilliant in its sheer pointlessness. You can't actually do much with it beyond stare, photograph, and wonder why on earth it's there, which is precisely why it works.

The thing stands as a proper landmark, visible from the road and impossible to miss once you know what you're after. It's the kind of quirky roadside attraction that breaks up a journey through the flat Lincolnshire landscape perfectly. Families with young kids find it amusing for about ten minutes - they'll dart around it, demand photos, then want ice cream. Older visitors tend to appreciate the sheer absurdity of it all. There's something refreshingly honest about a community putting up a giant peg rather than trying too hard.

It's free, naturally, and you can pull over and have a look whenever you fancy. No opening hours to worry about. Allow maybe fifteen minutes tops unless you're really committed to the perfect Instagram angle. If you're staying at Wagtail Country Park nearby, it's barely a detour - makes for a decent half-hour leg-stretch on a lazy afternoon. The surrounding countryside is pleasant enough for a walk, though there's not much else specifically going on at the peg itself. It's one of those attractions you do because it's there, and you'll genuinely enjoy having done it.
