Cloatley Meadows Nature Reserve

Wet grassland and woodland paths - that's what Cloatley Meadows amounts to, and honestly it's rather good if you're after something low-key near Malmesbury. The reserve runs along a stream valley, so there's proper bird and insect activity depending on the season. Spring brings everything from warblers to breeding lapwings; autumn's quieter but you get the sense of the landscape shifting.

It's not a destination in itself, mind you. You won't spend a full day here. But as a morning or late afternoon walk - say ninety minutes - it works perfectly, especially if you're camping at one of the nearby spots like Malmesbury Glamping or Burton Hill. The paths are straightforward, no scrambling required, which means families with younger kids can manage it without complaint.

The real appeal is the absence of crowds. You might see another person, might not. It's genuinely quiet. The meadows themselves are unremarkable in winter, but in summer the wildflowers are worth timing a visit around. Bring binoculars if you're interested in birds.

Access appears free, and there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - just gates and open grassland. Go when it's not waterlogged, obviously. Pair it with Malmesbury town itself if you've got an afternoon spare, or use it as a proper break from caravan site life. Not essential, but decent value for a quick nature fix.
