Clissold Park

Walk into Clissold Park on a decent morning and you'll find yourself in one of North London's proper treasures - a sprawling green space that actually feels removed from the city despite the postcode. It's a working nature reserve, not just a manicured park, which means the woodland gets genuinely wild in places.

The main draw is the lake. It's home to waterfowl you'd normally need binoculars and patience to spot elsewhere in London - herons, grebes, the lot. The pathways loop round it nicely, taking you past tree-lined sections where you can forget you're minutes from Stoke Newington. Bring kids if they're into spotting birds or having a proper run-around; they'll easily kill two hours here without complaint.

What works brilliantly is the mix. There's open grassland for kicking a ball about, wooded trails where light filters through properly thick canopy, and quiet corners by the water. It's free to enter, open dawn to dusk more or less. Allow at least an hour if you're just taking a walk, longer if you're actually watching wildlife.

If you're based at Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park over in Edmonton, this makes for a decent afternoon trip - about half an hour's drive or an involved bus route. It won't replace a proper country park visit, but for London wildlife watching, it's well worth the effort. Go early or late for the best bird activity.
