Clifton Park Sports

The Ouse Valley opens up properly here at Clifton Park, just north of York, where what started as a Victorian sports ground has quietly become one of the city's best-kept nature reserves. You're looking at grassland, woodland, and wetland all within walking distance of each other - the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon without seeing another soul, even in summer.

The reserve itself is genuinely worth an hour or two. Walkers will find themselves on decent paths that loop through different habitats; birdwatchers reckon it's one of York's better spots for spotting warblers and woodpeckers depending on season. Families with younger kids tend to manage the main circuit fine, though it's not a playground sort of place - you'll need children who actually want to look at birds rather than run about. The open grassland draws plenty of rabbits and muntjac deer in the quieter bits.

There's no charge to visit and you can rock up whenever suits. Spring and early summer are when the place really sings - the woodland floor comes alive and migrants start arriving. Winter's atmospheric too if you like that moody, skeletal-trees sort of thing.

If you're based at Nurseries Caravan Park or Wagtail Park, both within a few miles, this makes a cracking morning before heading into York itself. It's the sort of green space that breaks up a caravan week nicely - something different from the manicured park pitches, but without needing proper hiking boots.
