Walkers get the most from this one. The bridge itself is a straightforward crossing, nothing complicated, but the riverside paths around it reward an hour's gentle explore. The views upstream and downstream shift the light constantly, especially late afternoon when the stone turns warm. If you've got kids, they'll manage it easily - it's not dramatic enough to scare anyone but interesting enough to stop them asking when you're leaving.

Head here without expecting much fanfare. There's no visitor centre or cafe, and admission is free as far as anyone can tell. It fits naturally into a longer walk rather than as a standalone destination, which is precisely what makes it work. Pair it with time at nearby Nurseries Caravan Park or Wagtail Park - both are within a few miles - and you've got a proper excuse to get off the main York tourist trail.

The bridge rewards you most if you linger rather than snap and leave. Bring binoculars if birds interest you. The water levels change everything about how it photographs too, so timing matters more than you'd think.
