Clevedon Pier & Heritage Trust

The pier stretches out into the Bristol Channel like something from a seaside postcard that hasn't quite faded. Built in 1869, Clevedon Pier is one of only two Victorian iron piers left on the Bristol Channel - and you can feel the weight of that history the moment you walk onto the timber decking.

It's a proper working pier, not a fairground attraction. You stroll along the Victorian ironwork, watch the water below, and if the light's right, the views across to Wales are excellent. The Heritage Trust has done solid work keeping the structure from falling into the sea - Victorian engineering doesn't maintain itself - and there's a small cafe where you can sit with a cup of tea and watch the tide come and go.

Families get a kick out of it, particularly kids aged eight and up who can appreciate that they're actually walking on something that's been standing for 150 years. History types will want to linger longer, poking around the details of the ironwork and reading about the restoration efforts. Walkers heading to nearby Somerset Glamping will find the pier makes a decent half-hour detour from Bristol, especially at low tide when the exposed beach gives the whole thing a different character.

Allow an hour if you're thorough, forty minutes if you just want the photos. Check the weather before you go - grey days here feel genuinely atmospheric, but wind can make the walk feel less pleasant. It's free to use, which is refreshing for a listed structure this significant.
