Clenchwarton Park

The marshes around Clenchwarton are genuinely wild. This nature reserve east of King's Lynn sprawls across wet grassland and reedbed that shifts with the seasons - flooded in winter, lush and alive come spring. You're here to watch birds, mainly. Lapwings, redshanks, the occasional marsh harrier if you're lucky enough. The walking is flat and straightforward, which means even if the scenery doesn't grab you immediately, at least your knees won't suffer.

It's a proper spot for keen birders and anyone who enjoys watching nature work without too much fanfare. There are no facilities to speak of, so bring binoculars and a decent coat. The paths can get muddy depending on rainfall, so waterproof boots aren't a luxury here. Allow an hour or two - longer if you're patient with a camera.

This isn't somewhere you'd spend a full day unless you're obsessed with ornithology. What it does well is offer a genuine escape from Norfolk's caravan parks. Kings Lynn Caravan & Camping Park sits just a few miles away, making Clenchwarton an easy morning outing or late afternoon wander. Go at dawn or dusk for the best wildlife activity.
