Cleave Hill

The walk up Cleave Hill, just outside Devizes, rewards you with proper views across the Wiltshire downs. It's not a dramatic scramble - more a steady climb through open farmland that gives you time to actually look around as you go up. The summit itself is modest in height but the landscape spreads out in all directions, which is what matters.

On a clear day you can see for miles. The chalk downland rolls away in gentle waves, dotted with the occasional copse and field boundary. The path is straightforward, which means families with older kids won't struggle, though younger ones might find the trek a bit long for what is ultimately an open hilltop without much to do once you're there.

Allow a couple of hours for the full outing including time on top. Parking is farm-gate access - typical Wiltshire setup. Go on a crisp morning or late afternoon when the light's better and the crowds thinner. It's free, which is always a plus.
