Clean Hill

A proper hill walk rather than a tourist trap, Clean Hill rewards effort with views across Aberdeenshire that make the climb feel worthwhile. The ascent from near Huntly isn't brutal - maybe 45 minutes to the top if you're reasonably fit - and the landscape opens up as you gain height, with the Highlands rolling away in front of you.

What you get at the summit is space and perspective. On a clear day, the panorama stretches across moorland and farmland with enough distance to make you feel like you've actually gone somewhere. There's a cairn at the top, proper hillwalker's stuff, and you'll likely have the place to yourself on a weekday.

This is walker territory, not a family outing for toddlers. Teenagers who like a bit of a challenge will get something out of it, but pushchairs and grumbling kids won't appreciate the gradient. Allow two hours there and back if you're taking it steadily.

It slots well into a wider Huntly exploration - the castle's just down the road, and there's actual accommodation at Huntly Castle Holiday Park if you're basing yourself in the area. The walk itself is free, accessible any time, and works best in the later afternoon when the light softens and you're not squinting into the sun.

Worth the detour? If you're already in Aberdeenshire and fancy a proper stretch of the legs, yes. Go specifically for Clean Hill alone? Probably not. But pair it with other attractions in the region and it fills an hour very pleasantly.
