Clayhill Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Bury Saint Edmunds, Clayhill Wood is the sort of place that rewards you for getting off the main road. Nothing flashy - just mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually breathe. The forest floor stays surprisingly dry even after rain, which means you can visit almost any time of year without arriving home caked in mud.

It's ideal for families with kids who've got their walking legs on - the paths are manageable and there's real woodland atmosphere without needing a two-hour commitment. Dog walkers absolutely love it here. If you're staying at Apple Mount Retreat nearby, this is a five-minute drive and fills a morning nicely without feeling like a tourist trap.

Walkers come for the peace as much as the views. There's nothing dramatic about Clayhill - no ancient monuments or rare birds to tick off - but that's partly the point. It's the kind of wood where you might actually hear the trees rather than other people's conversations. Bring proper shoes though; the ground can be boggy in places despite what I said earlier.

How long? Depend on your pace, but plan for 45 minutes to 90 minutes for a decent loop. There's no visitor centre, no café (bring a flask), and no postcode drama about where to park. Just Suffolk woodland doing what it does best - existing quietly on the edge of town.
