Claver Hill

The walk up Claver Hill, just outside Hexham, rewards you with proper Northumbrian moorland views across the South Tyne Valley. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District fells - but it's a genuine hill with genuine effort required, and that's rather the point.

You get rolling countryside stretching in all directions once you're up there, with the valley floor laid out below. The walk takes roughly an hour each way depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath or admire the view. It's the sort of place that appeals to serious walkers wanting something substantive without needing mountaineering skills, and families with teenagers who fancy a half-decent challenge without epic commitment.

There's no visitor infrastructure here - no café, no visitor centre, no car park with facilities. You park where you can and set off on foot. That's rather refreshing, to be honest. Bring water and know the path beforehand, especially if the weather's cagey.

Worth timing it for late afternoon light, when the valley sides glow properly. Winter walks are exposed but atmospheric; summer can be buggy if there's been rain. The nearest campsites - Stonehaugh, Bellingham, and the Wild Northumbrian Tipis - are all within an hour's drive, making this a solid option for a park-based walking holiday in the area. It slots nicely alongside other Northumberland hill walks without dominating a day.
