Clarke's Hill

The highest point in Cambridgeshire sounds grander than it is, but that's rather the charm of Clarke's Hill. At 128 metres above sea level, it's barely a hill by most standards - more of a gentle rise on the edge of Cambridge - yet it's where the county reaches its modest peak. The walk up takes minutes rather than hours, making it a decent leg-stretcher if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Cambridge Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Cherry Hinton, both within a mile or so.

On a clear day you'll get views across the Cambridgeshire fens, though don't expect sweeping vistas. The landscape here is flat and agricultural, so the "views" are more about perspective than drama. It's the kind of place that appeals to completists - tick off the highest point - rather than those chasing Instagram moments. Families with young children will manage it without complaint, and it works as a quick stop between Cambridge itself and the caravan parks to the south.

The real value is in the walk itself. It's straightforward, accessible, and genuinely local. You won't find crowds or facilities, just open countryside that feels properly removed from the city despite being close enough to Cambridge for supper. Go on a clear autumn evening when the light softens and the fields are turning gold. Winter can be bleak here - exposed and windswept. If you're staying at Highfield Farm or Shepreth Mill further out, it's worth the short drive for something different to do on your rest day.
