Clapham Common

Clapham Common is one of those London green spaces that locals take for granted and visitors stumble upon by accident - usually while trying to find a decent coffee. It's 89 acres of proper common land, not a manicured park, so you get open grassland, tree-lined paths, and three ponds that actually feel like they belong to the landscape rather than being added later for aesthetics.

Walkers love it because the routes are straightforward and you're never more than a few minutes from the edge if you get bored. The ponds are the main draw - the central one particularly - and there's decent bird watching if you're into that sort of thing. Families with younger kids will get a couple of hours out of it, especially if you combine it with the playgrounds dotted around the edges. The surrounding roads are lined with decent pubs and cafes, so it works well as a base for a longer afternoon.

It's free to wander, open whenever you fancy, and sits comfortably between Battersea and Balham - useful if you're staying at Lovat Parks a couple of miles north and need somewhere genuinely peaceful that doesn't require a train journey. The best time is honestly early morning or weekday afternoons when you've got the space mostly to yourself. Peak summer weekends get rammed with south London's entire population having the same idea.

Worth an hour or two if you're in the area, but don't bend your plans around it. It's the sort of place that's brilliant because it's just there.
