Churchill Recreation Ground

The wetland paths at Churchill Recreation Ground pull you away from the Cotswold stone villages and into proper wildlife country. It's a nature reserve with real teeth - reed beds, open water, and the kind of birdwatching potential that keeps serious enthusiasts coming back. You'll spot lapwing, snipe, and if you're lucky, the occasional kingfisher cutting through the water like a blue arrow.

The reserve sits just outside Kingham, which makes it a natural add-on to a park holiday in the area. Bluewood Lodges is barely a mile away if you want that hot tub after a morning's walking, and Cotswold Hills Country Park offers a different flavour if you need variety. The paths are well-maintained but can get muddy - proper boots essential, especially in winter.

Allow two to three hours to do it justice without rushing. It's not a "tick off the list in forty minutes" sort of place. Bring binoculars. History buffs might find it less rewarding than the Cotswold towns nearby, but walkers and anyone with even a passing interest in birds will find the marshland genuinely absorbing. The light across the water in late afternoon is particularly good if you time it right.

Free access, as far as I can tell - typical for a local nature reserve. Check ahead though, as management can change. Peak season brings the crowds, but midweek in autumn feels almost private.
