The tower of St Mary and St Alkelda rises above Middleham village like something from a medieval postcard, though it's the interior that really stops you in your tracks. This is proper old - we're talking 12th century, with later additions that give it real architectural depth. The church sits right in the heart of the village, impossible to miss, and once you step inside the stone coolness hits you immediately.

What strikes you first is the simplicity of it all. There's no fussing about - just honest medieval craftsmanship, solid columns, and windows that let light fall across the nave in ways that make you understand why people found God in these spaces. The chancel's worth studying if you're into that sort of thing, and the tower itself is genuinely impressive from ground level.

Combine it with a walk around Middleham Castle - the ruins are tremendous - and you've got a solid half-day that feels genuinely Yorkshire rather than theme-park tourism.
