Church of St. John the Baptist, Plush

The stone church sits quietly in the village of Plush, a few miles south-west of Dorchester, and it's the sort of place that rewards the small detour. St. John the Baptist is medieval - proper old, with all the character that comes with centuries of village life happening within those walls. The building itself is modest by cathedral standards, but that's rather the point. You get the real thing here, not a visitor experience.

Inside, there's genuine atmosphere. Norman architecture, some decent stained glass, and the kind of worn pews that tell you exactly how many Sunday services have happened in this spot. It's the sort of church that history buffs will appreciate for its authenticity - no heavy restoration work obscuring the original bones of the place. Most visits take twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're reading the plaques properly.

This works brilliantly as part of a broader wander around Dorchester and the surrounding villages. The landscape here is proper Dorset - rolling countryside that makes you understand why Hardy set his novels here. Giants Head Caravan & Camping Park is just a couple of miles away, and Green Valley Yurts sits a bit further out if you're after something with more glamour. Either base gives you easy access to Plush and dozens of other small churches and villages worth exploring.

Admission is free, naturally. Go mid-week if you want genuine quiet. Weekends can see the odd visitor, but you're never fighting crowds. It's a real village church doing its actual job, not performing for tourists.
