The surrounding villages have character, though don't expect thrills. This is proper South Coast Hampshire - gentle, a bit slow, entirely unbothered by whether you're impressed or not.

I'd suggest going midweek when it's genuinely peaceful. Weekends can bring the weekend traffic from Southampton, which rather kills the whole point of visiting a quiet church.
