The red sandstone tower of this church rises above Ellesmere's quiet streets like something from a Victorian postcard, and once you're inside, you understand why it's worth the visit. The Church of Our Lady and the Welsh Martyrs combines a medieval foundation with Victorian restoration work that actually got things right - the interior feels lived-in rather than sterile.

It's genuinely moving to stand here. The church commemorates Catholic martyrs from Wales, which gives the building a particular weight of history that you feel walking through the door. The stonework is excellent, and there's enough architectural detail to keep anyone with a passing interest in church design occupied for twenty minutes or so.

This isn't a destination in itself - you're not booking a holiday around it. But if you're staying at Woodland Park Lodges or Archers' Meadow Glamping, both just three miles out, it makes a proper rainy afternoon or a quiet morning wander. Ellesmere itself is a pleasant enough market town with water nearby, so you could combine it with a poke around the shops and a cup of tea without stretching yourself.

Free to enter, no set hours that I could pin down, but standard church visiting times apply - mornings and early afternoons are your safest bet. The Welsh Martyrs connection feels local and genuine rather than tourist-board invented, which always counts in its favour.
