Church Dene

Church Dene is a proper woodland walk in Northumberland, just a short drive from Derecroft. You get dense forest, quiet paths, and the kind of natural feel that makes you forget you're not hours from civilisation. The main draw is the peace - it's not a destination with facilities or attractions in the traditional sense, but rather a place to actually be in the woods without crowds.

Walkers will get the most from it. Bring decent boots because the ground can be boggy after rain, and the paths are uneven in patches. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly without rushing. It's the sort of place where you notice things - birdsong, moss on trees, the smell after rain.

Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of mud will enjoy it. Toddlers might find the uneven terrain tricky. It's free access as far as anyone can tell, which is why it works so well as a day out from Valley View Camping & Glamping just down the road.

The real value is in combination with other activities in the area. It's not a day-long destination on its own, but if you're based at one of the local parks, it's exactly the kind of walk that fills a morning before heading elsewhere. Go early if the weather's been wet - the forest drains poorly in places and you'll avoid the worst of the mud.
