Christchurch Priory

The ruins of Christchurch Priory rise from the town centre like something from a medieval storybook, though what you're actually looking at is the remaining nave of a 12th-century priory church. It's genuinely striking - the enormous arched windows and soaring stonework give you a proper sense of scale. The building itself speaks volumes about Norman ambition and craftsmanship, even in its broken state.

You can wander around freely, which is the best bit. There's no pretence, no gift shop, just the structure itself and the space to take it in. History types will spend a solid hour picking out the architectural details - the decorated arcading is particularly fine - while families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in. The grounds are open to the air, so weather matters.

Christchurch town wraps around it, which is convenient. You're not trekking miles into countryside. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Meadowbank or Sandhills are closest at under two miles - it's worth an afternoon visit alongside exploring the town itself. The New Forest parks are only five or six miles further, so it slots nicely into a wider loop if you're doing a fortnight in the area.

Admission appears free, though do check locally as opening hours and access rules aren't always obvious at these older sites. Go on a clear day when the light catches those big windows properly. Rainy afternoons feel gloomy.
