Christchurch Church

The soaring spire of Christchurch punctures the flat Cambridgeshire skyline like a needle through silk. This is proper medieval architecture - built in the 14th century and still standing proud on the edge of Wisbech, a town that doesn't get nearly enough attention from visitors heading to Norfolk. Walk inside and you're met with that particular hush only old churches manage. Timber-beamed ceilings, stone columns worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, stained glass that catches the light just right. The chancel's particularly fine if you know what you're looking at - which I didn't until the vicar explained it.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box. Brass rubbings, memorials telling fragments of local stories, the sheer engineering feat of keeping these medieval walls upright. Won't occupy you for hours - thirty minutes to an hour covers it properly - but it's the exact sort of thing that rounds out a park-based holiday nicely. You're not making a special journey here, but if you're camped at Fenland Camping and Caravan Park or Westerby Farm (both excellent, both five minutes away), it's absolutely worth the short drive into town.

Families with older kids will get more from it than the under-eights crowd. History enthusiasts will find genuine medieval detail. Local guides often pop up if you're lucky - ask at Wisbech's visitor information if you want proper context before you visit. Free entry, as far as I could tell, though a small donation seems expected.
