Chipping Norton Museum

The market town of Chipping Norton has a small museum that tells the story of this corner of the Cotswolds without any pretension whatsoever. It's housed in a Georgian building on the high street and covers local history from Roman times through to the present day - pottery, textiles, domestic life, and the bits of industry that made the town tick. You'll walk round in maybe an hour, probably less if you're not a history buff.

This is genuinely free, which is always a plus, and it gives proper context to wandering round Chipping Norton itself. The town's worth a couple of hours anyway - decent independent shops, a proper working mill visible from the main road, and some lovely architecture that the museum helps you read more carefully. Families with younger kids might find it a bit text-heavy and static, though the domestic objects usually spark some questions.

It's the kind of place that works best if you're already in town for lunch or shopping rather than a specific destination in itself. If you're camping at Cotswold Hills Country Park just down the road, or staying at Chipping Norton Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it's an excellent wet-afternoon option. Combine it with a walk around the town and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Check opening hours before you go - it keeps proper limited hours.
