China House Pond

There's a modest pond tucked away near Derby that doesn't get the fanfare of flashier Midlands attractions, but it's quietly rather good. China House Pond is a proper water body with enough character to justify a morning wander, especially if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Field of Dreams or Broadleaves.

The water itself is the draw here - clear enough to watch waterfowl, surrounded by accessible banks that make it easy to get close without scrambling. It's the sort of place where you notice things if you're the noticing type: dragonflies in summer, the way light hits the surface at different times of day, occasional wading birds picking through the shallows. Not vast, so you're not looking at an all-day expedition.

Families with young kids will find it manageable - no complicated terrain, straightforward paths - though there's not a great deal of infrastructure about it. Serious walkers might treat it as a waypoint on a longer loop rather than a destination in its own right. Birdwatchers and photographers tend to get more from it than casual strollers.

The sensible approach is to combine it with exploration of the wider Derby area rather than plan your day around it alone. Morning or early evening tends to be better for wildlife spotting. Free access, as far as I could tell, though facilities are minimal. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're taking your time, less if you're just popping over from your glamping site.
