Chimney

An old industrial chimney stands as a solitary relic on the Devon landscape - brick, weathered, and far taller than you'd expect when you first spot it. This is what remains of Devon's industrial past, a time when factories and mills dotted the countryside around Exeter rather than clustered in cities down south.

You can't go inside it, but the chimney itself is the draw. The walk to reach it is pleasant enough, and if you're staying at Woodland Springs or Barley Meadow touring parks nearby, it's an easy half-hour detour from your base. Don't expect crowds or crowds or visitor facilities - there's nothing commercial about this place, which is rather the point. Free to visit, naturally. Allow maybe 20 minutes if you're stopping to photograph it and think about it properly.

It works best as part of a wider walk through the area rather than a destination in itself. Families with older kids who are into industrial archaeology will get something from it. Casual tourists might find it a bit underwhelming without the context. Worth a stop if you're in the region, but don't reroute your entire holiday around it.
