Chiddingstone Castle

A genuine castle this isn't - Chiddingstone is actually a Tudor manor house with castellated battlements that give it a rather theatrical castle-like appearance. It sits on the edge of the village of Chiddingstone, just outside Edenbridge, and the building itself is what catches your eye first: all turrets and gothic pretension, looking rather like someone's romantic Victorian fantasy of what a castle ought to be.

Inside, it's a cabinet of curiosities more than a grand historical display. The rooms are crammed with Egyptian mummies, samurai armour, Japanese art, and an eclectic collection of weapons and artefacts accumulated by its former owners. It's genuinely odd in the best way - you'll wander from medieval reliquaries to Buddhist sculptures to suits of armour without any obvious narrative connecting them. History buffs will find plenty to pick over, though casual visitors might feel a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff.

The grounds are pleasant enough for a stroll, and there's a village to explore afterwards - Chiddingstone itself is properly pretty, all half-timbered houses and a church worth a look. It's worth combining with the nearby holiday parks: Luna Domes, Apple Acres, or Glamping at Honnington Farm all sit within easy reach, making this a good half-day stop during a longer Kent break. Allow two to three hours if you're thorough. Not a must-do, but if you're in the area and fancy something slightly left-field, it delivers.
