Chewton Bunny Nature Reserve

A short walk from New Milton takes you to Chewton Bunny Nature Reserve, a small but genuinely worthwhile pocket of wild space where you can spot heathland birds, insects, and the occasional reptile. It's the sort of place where half an hour becomes an hour because you've stopped to watch something interesting - a hobby, maybe, or just a flash of adder in the gorse.

The reserve itself is modest in scale. This isn't a day-long expedition. But that's partly the point. If you're staying at Hoburne Naish or one of the other caravan parks clustered nearby, it's an easy leg-stretch that feels properly away from the leisure park routine. Families with young kids get decent value from it - there's path to wander, things to spot, and no pressure to trudge for miles.

What makes it work is the habitat. Lowland heathland like this is rare in southern England now, and the reserve protects something genuinely important, even if visitors only see the accessible bits. Spring and early summer are best for flowers and bird activity. Autumn's quieter but less crowded. Winter? Fine if you don't mind damp.

Free access, open at reasonable hours (though exact times vary seasonally - best to check locally in New Milton before you go). Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're actually looking at things rather than just walking through. It pairs well with the holiday parks' facilities - close enough for an afternoon outing when the weather's half-decent, not so far you need to plan a whole day around it.
