Chevin's Wood

The woodland walks around Chevin's Wood near Bury Saint Edmunds feel properly peaceful, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Ancient trees tower overhead, dappled light filtering through the canopy in that particular way that makes you understand why people get romantic about forests. It's straightforward stuff - trails wind through the woods, some gentler than others, and you'll spot the occasional wildlife if you're lucky enough and quiet enough.

No entrance fees that I'm aware of, no facilities to speak of, just woodland as it should be. Go on a dry day if possible; Suffolk soil gets muddy something fierce after rain. The autumn colours here are worth timing a visit for if you can manage it.
