Chesterton Recreation Ground

Walking through Chesterton Recreation Ground on the east side of Cambridge feels like stepping away from the city without actually leaving it. The meadows open up properly once you're past the entrance, and there's genuine space to breathe here - unusual for somewhere so close to the town centre.

It's a nature reserve that takes itself seriously. You'll find wet grassland, ditches, and the sort of vegetation that brings in birds and insects if you're bothered about that sort of thing. The footpaths are straightforward enough, nothing technical, so it works fine for a casual walk with the family or on your own if you want a bit of quiet. Kids under eight might find it a touch dull after twenty minutes unless you're really into spotting wildlife, but older children keen on nature will get more from it.

The ground connects well with a wider Cambridge walking circuit, so you're not stuck doing a loop and heading back the way you came. From Lodeside Glamping or Fen Meadows, both just under five miles away, it's a genuinely easy reach if you're glamping in the area and fancy stretching your legs without driving.

There's no admission charge - it's free to access, which is the right call for what amounts to an open meadow. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're pottering about. Go early on a weekend if you want to avoid the local dog walkers, though honestly the ground's big enough that crowds aren't really an issue.
