Cherryvale Playing Fields

Ten minutes south of Belfast, Cherryvale Playing Fields is one of those local spots that doesn't make the glossy brochures but absolutely should if you're camping nearby. It's a proper nature reserve - open grassland with patches of woodland, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think after wandering through the city.

The reserve itself is free to access and works best if you've got an hour or so to kill. There's a decent walking route through the grounds, and it's genuinely pleasant in decent weather - nothing dramatic, but restful. Kids will be fine here for a bit; there's space to run about, though it's not a theme park. Birdwatchers and botanists will find it more rewarding than casual visitors, to be honest.

The real strength of Cherryvale is how it slots into a caravan holiday in the Lisburn area. Both Dundonald Touring Caravan Park and The Pods at Streamvale are within easy driving distance, so you could spend a morning here before heading into Belfast proper or exploring the coastal towns eastward. Spring and early summer are when the reserve looks best - wildflowers, nesting birds, the whole lot.

It's not a headline attraction, but as a convenient green break between Belfast and your accommodation, it'll do the job. Worth a visit if you're based nearby, though don't rearrange your itinerary to make it happen.
