Cheriton Hill

The walk up Cheriton Hill rewards you with one of Somerset's best viewpoints, and it doesn't require mountaineering skills or half a day to earn it. The summit sits at 900 feet, giving you proper views across the Levels towards Glastonbury Tor on a clear day - the kind of vista that makes the 20-minute climb feel entirely worthwhile. You can see for miles across farmland and woodland, and on good weather it's genuinely brilliant.

It's an accessible walk rather than a serious hike, making it ideal if you've got teenagers or reasonably fit kids in tow. The path is straightforward, though it does get muddy after rain. Allow an hour all in, including time to sit about at the top with a flask. History buffs might appreciate that you're looking out over terrain that's been worked and settled for centuries, though there's nothing specific to see up there itself - it's the perspective that counts.

Castle Cary is the nearest town, sat just a few miles north, and it's convenient for stocking up before heading out. The surrounding area is well set up for a camping holiday, with Sunnyhill Campsite only 3.9 miles away and Hadspen Glamping just 4.1 miles if you want something a touch more comfortable. Long Hazel Park is another solid option at 5.1 miles. Pop up Cheriton Hill on your first morning, get your bearings from the top, then explore the quieter corners of Somerset from a proper base.
