Cheristow Wood

There's something about walking into Cheristow Wood that makes you feel properly separated from the seaside chaos of Bideford. Ancient trees tower overhead, thick moss clings to every trunk, and the path winds through the kind of green that actually makes you breathe differently. It's a small woodland but genuinely atmospheric - the sort of place where an hour evaporates without you noticing.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, especially those keen on exploring the quieter side of North Devon. The trees are old enough to make you wonder what they've seen, and the canopy is thick enough that it's genuinely cool even on warm days. Kids who are past the "carry me" stage tend to get on with it, though it's not a destination attraction - more something you slot in during a broader day out in the area.

If you're based at Coastal Cabins Glamping less than a mile away, or camping at Roeys Retreat four miles down the road, it's exactly the sort of morning walk that sets up a day properly. Atlantic Horizons sits five and a half miles off, but still within easy reach if you're keen on woodland and want to stretch your legs before heading back for lunch. Admission appears to be free, which at least removes the decision-making pain. Allow an hour to genuinely enjoy it without rushing.
